One Of My Favorite Cakes To Make And Eat During Winter | Spiced Cake

Whenever I can, I try to bake something. For some reason it’s really calming to bake and of course, in the end you have a tasty thing to eat. Awesome, right? I have been baking spiced cakes for a very long time, which in Dutch is called a ‘Kruidcake’. Most of the time I would just use the box where you only have to add water to and bake that one. But this time I wanted to make it from scratch. And let me tell you, it is so tasty! So here I have the recipe of it for you. ?

What you’ll need | 200 grams of self-rising flour, 150 grams of dark brown sugar, 125 grams of butter, 125 ml of milk, two eggs, two teaspoons of mixed spices (which you can buy or make yourself), one tablespoon of ahorn syrup, a pinch of cinnamon and salt (inspired by this recipe).

How to | First I always start with measuring everything out and putting it in different bowls. This makes it a lot more organized when you have to actually make the mixture. First mix the butter, sugar and a pinch salt of salt together. Make sure the butter is on room temperature, otherwise you’ll get big lumps in your mixture (which is something you don’t want).

Now it’s time to add the eggs to the mixture you already have, one by one. Mix the first egg very well through the mixture before adding the next one. When you’ve done that, also add the cinnamon and ahorn syrup to it. Then comes the party where you have the mix the whole time while adding the self-rising flour. I decided to add everything in different parts and also alternated with adding the milk. This worked really well, and after mixing everything, it looked something like you can see above.

Don’t forget to grease your cake tin with butter before adding the mixture to it. I always try to add the mixture somewhat evenly to the tin so the cake doesn’t go lopsided when it bakes. After that it’s time to put your cake in a pre-headed oven (180 °C). I left mine in the oven for about 35 to 40 minutes. It really depends on your oven so make sure to check the cake with a toothpick to see if it is done.

And voilà! Your spiced cake is finished. ? Let the spiced cake completely cool before you get it out of the tin. I like to eat mine with a bit of butter on it. But you are also able to eat it without, just like a normal piece of cake. I do think the name of this cake is kind of misleading because it’s not spicy.
