Spending Time With Rembrandt And Van Gogh | Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Besides working a lot this summer, I also made time to do something every week that I still wanted to do. Last Sunday I shared my Brandy Melville inspired DIY with you and today it’s time for my visit to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. If you have read my Summer Resolutions, you might know that my plan was to go here with my mom and grandma. And two weeks ago we finally all had the time to go there!

On Friday August 14, 2015 it was finally the day my grandma, mom and I were going to visit the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam. I’ve always wanted to go there since it got renovated but never got the chance until now. I think everyone that lives in The Netherlands should go there at least once in their lives and I felt kind of ashamed I hadn’t been haha.

Anyways, when we arrived at Amsterdam Central Station we took the tram to Museumplein. If you’ve read my ‘A day in Amsterdam’ from a couple of months ago, you might have seen a part of Museumplein and the gardens of Rijksmuseum already. Last time it was a really cold and foggy day but this day it was super sunny and warm (which helped me take a lot better photos than last time).

After entering the museum, we all had one thing we had and wanted to see: Nachtwacht (The Night Watch) by Rembrandt. I guess people all around the world know about this painting and at Rijksmuseum it is displayed! If you don’t know what it is, you can see it in the first of the three photos above. You can see that there were a lot of people taking photos of it (even a couple people taking iPad photos…). To be completely honest, I was kind of disappointed. It always looked so impressive and big in photos on the internet but in real life they only had the middle part of the painting displayed.

During my visit to the Rijksmuseum I was mainly focussed on the different type of art works and not on the artists. In the photos above you can see some of the favorite art works I saw. The first one has the most beautiful detailing and colors. I just had to take a close up photo because of that.

In between all of the big expositions were these little rooms with some photos or art works. That’s where I found this floral art work. I don’t know why but I just really liked it because of the different flowers that were displayed. And in the last photo above you see this random painting, which I thought looked really cool because of the unique frame.

At first I didn’t realize how big the Rijksmuseum actually is but let me tell you, it’s huge. After a while of walking through the different expositions, we found out there was also a way to get to the other side of the museum where they had even more art works. How crazy is that?

While walking through the museum, all of the sudden we found this golden Vespa type scooter. My grandma immediately said this was something I would like and of course I did. I think it’s funny they also have things like this at the museum.

Besides art work from Rembrandt, they also have some work from Vermeer and Van Gogh. When I visited MoMA in New York I already saw a couple of things from Van Gogh but I never saw his self portrait in real life before. This was also one of the things we just had to see while we were at the Rijksmuseum. When we got there, it turned out to be really small. The funny thing is, when you see something like this on television or on the internet you always think it will look a certain size. And then when you finally see it in real life, it turns out to be smaller haha.

When I was at the Rijksmuseum in January with my friends, we didn’t go in to the museum but we did walk through the garden. I think this has to be my favorite part of the museum. Just like MoMA it has this beautiful garden with some art works in there. Since it was really nice weather, we decided to get some ice cream and enjoy the sunshine. Have you ever been to the Rijksmuseum before? What would be your favorite part of the museum?
