You Don’t Take A Photograph, You Make It | Five Things

A beautiful sunset, a wall full with graffiti and a field full of pretty flowers… When I look around me, I see so many beautiful things I would love the photograph. I’ve been loving photography for a long time now and over the years I’ve found out what I like and don’t like when it comes to taking photos. So I thought I would share five things that I use and think of when I am taking photos for my blog or Instagram.

When you want to photograph something a camera will come in handy. So the cameras I use are a Canon 350D and a Canon PowerShot SX600 HS. The 350D is a digital SLR camera. I mostly use this when I want to take really high quality and up-close photos. And the PowerShot camera is a compact camera. I take this one when I want to take pictures somewhere but don’t want to take my big and heavy camera.

Something I really like doing when I am looking for inspiration is going on Weheartit and on Tumblr. When I find myself getting bored, I always go on Weheartit to ‘heart’ some of the images I really like and after that I post these on my Tumblr. This way I can look back on these photos and get inspiration for a new blog post and the photos for it.

For my blog I have to take a lot of photos, because with every post you do have to have some visuals. Wherever you are, you always have to think about the light when you take a photo. I take all my outfit photos outside but who takes the photos for me? I’m very lucky I have got two people (my dad and Lotte) who are always willing to take photos when I want to make a new outfit post. But especially outside you have to think about where the light is coming from and how it will make your photo look. So when I start shooting some photos for my blog I always try different spots and angles and when I am happy with the how it looks, I will use that spot for the rest of my photos.

If you’re someone who loves to take photos and share them with the world (like me), Instagram will be your favorite app. In the beginning of this year I got an iPhone 5S and I’ve been loving it every since. It works great and takes really beautiful photos. Before I couldn’t take a good picture when I saw something I really wanted to photograph something and put it on my Instagram but now I can. If it is scenery or just something I see in a store or a peek at my outfit, it can be anything.

And when you take a photo, you have to edit them of course. For editing my blog photos I mostly use iPhoto. Here I will crop and edit the exposure of a photo, just all the simple things. But for my Instagram photos I use some apps. My favorites are VSCO Cam and Photogrid. VSCO Cam is an app (it’s free!) where you can edit almost everything of your photo but the most important one is: put on a filter. We all know the Instagram filters but I really love the filters VSCO Cam has. Especially: T1 and X1. And at the moment I don’t put up any squared photos on Instagram, so when I want get a white border I use Photogrid (also free). It’s just a really easy to use app. You choose a photo, add it to the white square and just change it around as much as you like until you’re happy with the end result. And then your photo is ready for Instagram!

Well, these are five things I find most important when it comes to photography. Of course there are so many more thing but then I could go on forever. The photos in this post show the different kind of photos you could take when you’re in a park. I love how they turned out, so I would love to know what your favorite picture is and do you have any great tips for photographing?

What a useful blog post. And I love the quote. It is such a wonderfully creative hobby. I truly love taking photos. I also love looking at other’s photos because it’s so interesting to see the world through someone else’s eyes/lens.

Can’t wait to check out your Tumblr! I just joined a while back and I find it so inspiring as well.
