Most Important Things When Traveling With Friends | Five Things

When I was seventeen years old I went on the first trip without my parents. My friends and I just wanted to get out of the country and have a relaxed holiday. Before we left, I didn’t really know what to expect. I knew it would be different than going on a trip with my family. With my family we always try to explore something every single day but on this holiday we didn’t really do anything. Laying by the pool and sometimes we would go to the little town to just walk around. Last year I went on a trip to Barcelona with my friends and this time it would be an active holiday. Since I went on two totally different trips with my friends, I’ve actually got five tips for you when you’re traveling with friends and want to have an awesome time.

First things first, you have to decide on a city or place to go. In a group of people this is harder because not everyone wants to go to the same cities. My friends and I aren’t very difficult people so we actually started looking for different kind of cities we all haven’t been before. It started with Ibiza (but that was too expensive for us), then Palermo and then we ended up booking a trip to Athens, Greece. A tip for deciding where to go is first make a list with places everyone has been. Then let everyone make a list of places they would like to go. After that you can already skip some of the places people have put on their list because others might have already been there. And from there you can start looking up information about the cities everyone would like to visit. This way you will easily end up with one place you all want to go to.

When you have chosen your destination and booked your flight and everything like that, it’s time to fully plan your trip. Planning is very important when you’re traveling with friends. Everyone has different interest and wants to see and do different things. So just like the one before, make a list of things you would like to visit. My friends and I like to sit together and look up things we can do. With this it is always handy to have a big map from the city you’re going to visit so you can mark all the different places everyone wants to see. This way you don’t have to plan all of the days you’re there but when you open the map you can see what places are close together and visit them.

This next thing, which is very important, is money. To figure out how much money you have and want to take yourself is always a struggle but in a group it’s worse. You don’t want to pay everything seperate when you’ve just gone out to dinner somewhere. In the beginning it will be fine but after some time people will get frustrated and splitting the bill gets annoying. That’s why my friends and I decided that everyone will bring the same amount of money and that’s where we will buy food and other things we need to share from. Keep in mind, some cities are more expensive than others. Do some research on the place you’re going so you know what others recommend on the amount of money to take with you. I think this is always very helpful.

Traveling with friends is definitely different from traveling with your family. The first time I went on a trip with friends I actually figured out how different it is. Of course you have to plan and pay for everything yourself. Traveling with friends is lots of fun (and you’ll have the time of your life) but you also have to deal with different opinions and things people like to do. On a family trip you just go with the flow and everything will be okay, but with friends you always have to be considerate. If someone needs more time to wake up in the morning, just give them their time. Little things like this will make your trip so much more fun and everyone will have a big smile on their face the entire time.

Besides all of the wonderful things above, during the trip you also have to take time for yourself. When we were in Barcelona, we would leave in the morning to see something and in the afternoon we would come back to our apartment to relax for a little bit. Someone might want to read a book, another one will take a nap and I would spend this time reading blogs or playing around with the photos I took during the day. One thing I will playing around with on our trip to Athens, Greece is this Diana F+ lomography camera from UncommonGoods. I’ve never used a camera like this and it’s always fun to take photos of a new place with a new camera. Besides that it would also be a great birthday gift to someone or just a random gift for a friend that loves photography as well ?

The crazy thing is, next week around this time I will be in Athens, Greece with my friends! I am so excited to explore this city. Of course I will be sharing everything about the trip on here very soon. In the mean time, I would like to know if you have any suggestions for things to do or visit in Athens, Greece. We have some things lined up we want to visit but there’s always room for more. Do you agree with these five things? What is your ultimate tip for traveling with friends?

Love,

Neeltje

This post is so helpful. I can definitely relate with the difference between going with the flow with family and having to be considerate with friends. I’ve gone on a few little road trips with friends and it was such a different experience than traveling with family! Loved your tips on how to decide a place and what to do, I’ll definitely keep those in mind!
